UNDERGRADUATE OPPORTUNITIES

REU program in Tropical Ecology and Evolution

This is a summer experience where students develop a research project under the advice of faculty mentors in areas such as ecology of plant communities, soils, and streams or evolution, such as population genetics.

Tree Censuses

Luquillo Forest Dynamics Plot (LFDP)

  • 5-year census of all trees >1 cm DBH located in the 16-hectare LFDP at El Verde Field Station
    • The 6th LFDP tree census is presently underway.

El Yunque Forest Chronosequence Project

  • Annual census of all trees >1 cm DBH in four ~1 ha research plots located in variable-aged forest stands distributed throughout El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico.

 

Seedling Censuses

Luquillo Forest Dynamics Plot (LFDP) and El Yunque Chronosequence Project

  • Annual census of all seedlings in 573 research plots distributed throughout the 16-hectare LFDP and 80 research plots distributed throughout four ~1 ha research plots located in variable-aged forest stands
